The Spiritual Warrior is a person who challenges the dreams of fear, lies, false beliefs, and judgments that create suffering and unhappiness in his or her life. It is a war that takes place in the heart and mind of a man or woman. The quest of the Spiritual Warrior is the same for spiritual seekers around the world. The Spiritual Warrior faces this challenge with the clarity and awareness that this war is fought within himself and that Truth and unconditional love are on the other side of these battles. This is what the Toltecs refer to as Personal Freedom. You can find this referenced in the book The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz.

The Four Agreements are:

1. Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

pain in yoga practice with david garrigues

And what I am talking about includes but is not at all limited to physical pain. There are physical, emotional, and spiritual layers to the pain that arises by necessity within anyone who treads a spiritual path.

With the passage of time and through repetition practice shows you that facing and experiencing pain is one of the main sources of wisdom. It is essential to acknowledge, respect and know pain as a principal source of spiritual nourishment that leads to growth and wisdom. As James Hillman said “the wound is the eye”, meaning that your pain is the means by which you see inside your self and thus win soul knowledge.

joseph campbell on mythology and the affirmation of life

Eternity is not some later time. Eternity is not a long time. Eternity has nothing to do with time. Eternity is that dimension of here and now which thinking and time cut out. This is it. If you don’t get it here, you won’t get it anywhere. The experience of eternity right here and now is the function of life.

-Joseph Campbell (at about 15:20 into interview with Bill Moyers)
